Creatures and Conservation at the Alexandria Zoo

View All Kids Activities

Alexandria’s award-winning zoo is home to the only pair of white-tailed sea eagles at a North American zoo. Other rare and endangered species in its collection include Malayan tigers, clouded leopards, maned wolves, miniature water buffalo and dwarf crocodiles. At the African Experience exhibit, lions roam large, naturalistic habitats. A Louisiana section features animals native to the state’s distinct ecosystem, such as red wolves, alligators and otters. Additional highlights include a snake house and Galapagos tortoises.

The 33-acre zoo’s focus on wildlife conservation translates into opportunities for fun and enrichment for young animal lovers, including weeklong summer camps. Yearly traditions include the Holiday Light Safari featuring dazzling light displays, music and train rides and Boo at the Zoo, a family-friendly alternative to trick-or-treating. A popular draw for young and old alike is Bayou Le Zoo Choo Choo, a scale model of a C.P. Huntington steam engine that circles the complex, providing visitors with a chance to get an up-close look at zoo animals from its passenger seats.
