BACK TO Magnet Schools

Peabody Montessori Elementary School in Alexandria is a pre-kindergarten-through-6th-grade campus where students write and publish books, explore music and movement and use iPads in the classroom. This Rapides Parish magnet school earned an A rating from the Louisiana Department of Education for 2014-15, with 92 percent of students meeting or surpassing grade-level expectations for academic achievement in 2013. Classroom instruction at Peabody embodies the child-centered, hands-on educational philosophy of the Montessori approach.

The Peabody curriculum incorporates fundamental subjects such as math, English and social studies while also offering high-achieving students opportunities to challenge themselves through a gifted track. Teaching innovations at Peabody combine development of academic skills with lessons about intangible concepts such as teamwork. For example, in 2013 a group of 16 gifted students researched holiday traditions and published a book about their findings. With a focus on health and creative expression, classes in art, music and movement balance the challenges of more rigorous, formal topics.

Extracurricular programs include cheerleading, 4-H, glee club and basketball. A student talent show, class field trips to local sites such as the Alexandria Zoo and an October fall festival are annual campus events.
