BACK TO Magnet Schools

Alexandria's Phoenix Magnet Elementary School is a Five Star-rated pre-kindergarten-through-6th-grade campus where 97 percent of students met or exceeded grade-level expectations for academic achievement in 2013. The arts and music are a special focus at this Rapides Parish academic-magnet school, which received an A rating from the Louisiana Department of Education for 2014-15.

Art, library, music, physical education and expert instruction in viola, cello, bass and violin augment classroom studies at Phoenix, where pre-kindergartners make graphs of sounds and older children study economics and create artwork inspired by the "Great Masters." Music theory is an important component of the curriculum with many students able to read music and compose simple melodies. Sixth-grade students can choose electives such as choir, yearbook, computer applications and advanced arts. Teachers use technology across all subject areas, and the school's three computer labs are available for use by classes and individual students for projects and research.

An ecology club, 4-H and a school chapter of the Junior Beta community service club are among the extracurricular choices for fifth- and sixth-grade students. Students in every grade also connect with the community by helping to prepare meals for local firefighters each month. A yearly school musical showcases the talents of several Phoenix students, who also participate in Central Louisiana arts celebrations, such as the Tom Peyton Memorial Arts Festival.
