More Than One Hundred Acres for Recreation at Hunter Park

View All Parks & Rec

Frank O. Hunter Park, located in the southeastern part of Alexandria, is undergoing a transformation as part of a $96-million investment in public amenities in Alexandria’s cultural and historic districts. Currently, the park maintains several lighted tennis courts, a ball field, basketball courts and walking trails for over 100 acres of space.

In the renovations to come, the citywide project centers on rejuvenation and expansion of Hunter Park’s sports facilities and playgrounds, including construction of a new football complex for the city’s semi-pro team, the Bayou Bengals. An expanded community recreation center and a new gymnasium and wellness area are additional aspects of the park project, which is currently underway.

The renovation and expansion of Hunter Park includes new passive-use areas, such as expanded, paved multi-use trails for walking and jogging and shaded picnic areas under the trees. The park will continue to maintain tennis courts and wide-open grassy spaces with plenty of room for recreational activities.
