Northwestern State University (NSU) is a four-year, public university in Natchitoches, with an enrollment of about ​9,500 students. The institution offers a wide range of curricula in a smaller, nurturing atmosphere where students receive personal attention. NSU offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 50 different programs including:

  • Biology
  • Business
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Education
  • Electrical and Industrial Engineering
  • Liberal Arts
  • Nursing

One of NSU's many respected programs is the Computer Information Systems. Between 1999 and 201​5, the university earned 1​5 first-place finishes at the Association of Information Technology Professionals National Collegiate Conference. Another NSU stand-out is the Louisiana Folklife Center, a research facility housed at the university, whose holdings include archival papers and recordings of hundreds of indigenous artists, musicians and others who have influenced the state's folklife. The NSU Scholars' College offers top students high-level coursework and additional research opportunities.

Numerous extracurricular activities ensure all NSU students have a well rounded college experience. The university hosts student government, student clubs, academic honor societies, Greek life and intramural sports. School athletics are popular as well. The NSU Demons compete in NCAA Division I sports, including men's baseball, basketball, cross country, football and track and field, and women's basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, track and field and tennis.
