Residents of Central Louisiana enjoy year-round access to dramatic and musical theater, instrumental and vocal ensembles, dance productions, gallery openings and arts lectures at Northwestern State University’s (NSU) Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA).

CAPA is comprised of NSU’s fully-accredited Departments of Fine + Graphic Art, Music, and Theatre and Dance. The Department of Theatre and Dance is designated as the Center for Excellence in the Arts for the University of Louisiana System and is one of only 150 programs in the U.S. to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Examples of CAPA’s arts events include:

  • Dramatic and musical theater, including Broadway productions such as Uncle Vanya and Avenue Q
  • Modern dance performances
  • The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra
  • NSU Symphony Chorus concerts
  • The Spirit of Northwestern (“SON”) Demon Marching Band
  • Special gallery exhibitions featuring painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and mixed media at the Orville J. Hanchey Gallery
